STATE FOREST SERVICE COLLEGE, P.O. New Forest, DEHRADUN
At present there are three State Forest Service Colleges in India under the direct control of Directorate of Forest Education, Dehradun set up by Ministry of Environment & Forest, Govt. of India in order to impart training to S.F.S. Officers of various states. The college at Barnihat, Assam was the first to be set up in India in 1976. The second S.F.S. College was started in Coimbatore in 1980. S.F.S. College, Dehradun was and so far the last to be set up. It was established in the New Forest campus on May 01st 1981.
The college campus has a centrally located main building with two hostels for the trainees on the North and South sides. The majestic main building constructed as per British architecture comprises of an administrative unit, lecture halls, seminar rooms, computer lab, geology and soil lab, a library and a gymnasium.
The purpose of this training course of 1.5 years is to give the officer trainees the tools that he or she will need to succeed in the forestry career.
The training course has been designed by the Ministry of Environment & Forest to encompass the key areas of – (a) Management of the vast natural resources of the forests, (b) Conservation of precious forest resources with understanding the policies of Government, objectives of industries and the common man’s requirement, (c) Accomplishment of any allied or non forestry responsibilities when entrusted by the state.
The trainees are imparted technical knowledge and management skills through a wide spectrum of around twenty subjects like General Botany, Silviculture, Forest Resource Management, Forest surveying, Forest Policy and Laws, Forest Engineering, Ecology & Environmental sciences, Adverse influence on forests, Forest utilization, Forest resource management, Natural resource management, Environmental economics, Biodiversity conservation and management, Joint Forest management, Rural & Tribal management, Human resource development management, Forest accounts and procedures & modern tools and applications in forestry.
In addition to the class room lectures, the trainees are send for study tours to various forest ranges of the country in order to understand the variation of the forestry in different states under region specific, bio geographical and social conditions. This makes them understand the scope of their duties and responsibilities that they shall be required to discharge in the field.
During their stay, the officer trainees are encouraged to organize and participate in various artistic, cultural and literary activities. The daily official activity of the trainees starts and ends with the Physical Training session of an hour each in the morning as well as in the evening. The college actively participates in the All India Forest Sports Meet under the banner of D.F.E.(Directorate of Forest Education).
